Getting here

Cresswell is located on the Northumberland coast, and getting here is fairly straightforward whether you’re travelling by car, train or public transport.

Recent improvements to local transport links -including the new revised X22 bus timetable and the reopening of the Northumberland Line -have made travelling to the area much easier without a car, especially from Newcastle and south east Northumberland. These offer great advantages for anyone wishing to take advantage of a car free holiday or walking the coastal path.

Below you’ll find the main travel options along with nearby rail, bus and airport connections.

Driving

Cresswell is easily accessible by road from across the North East and beyond, making it an ideal base for exploring the Northumberland coast.

Approximate drive times:

  • Newcastle upon Tyne – 40 minutes

  • Morpeth – 25 minutes

  • Alnwick – 40 minutes

Bus

The X22 bus service provides a direct route between Newcastle upon Tyne and Cresswell, making it easier than ever to enjoy a car-free break on the Northumberland coast.

The route connects with:

  • Newcastle city centre

  • Ashington

  • Newbiggin-by-the-Sea

  • Amble

  • surrounding coastal communities

Ideal for:

  • weekend breaks

  • walkers looking to start their journey on the Northumberland coast path.

  • guests arriving by train

  • Kids looking for an adventure - old and young!

  • or if you are just looking for a relaxed coastal escape without the need to drive

Train

If you're travelling by train you can now use the newly reopened Northumberland Line, connecting Newcastle upon Tyne directly with Ashington.

Ashington is the nearest rail connection to Cresswell and is around 15–20 minutes away by bus or taxi.

You can then:

  • connect onto local bus services towards Cresswell

  • take a taxi

  • or combine rail travel with cycling to explore the coast

Regular services from Newcastle make travelling to south east Northumberland by public transport easier than ever.

Flying?

The nearest airport is Newcastle International Airport.

From the airport, guests can travel by Metro to Northumberland Park station, where there are onward rail and bus connections into south east Northumberland.

Alternatively, visitors can travel into Newcastle city centre and connect directly onto the X22 bus service towards Cresswell.
