The idea for a sensory caravan was born from a simple, heartfelt desire expressed by our son, Robert. He said he wanted to help and create a space for “other children like him.” As his parents, we shared his passion for creating inclusive, engaging, and meaningful experiences for people of all ages and abilities. Our journey began with a straightforward yet profound question: How can we achieve this?

This question sparked a series of brainstorming sessions, research, planning, and collaboration, ultimately leading to the creation of our sensory caravan. Here’s our story.

Our battles and experiences

Robert has faced many struggles, and we’ve certainly had our battles, from local authorities refusing appropriate provision to the simple ignorance of hidden disabilities in the wider community. We are seasoned SEND parents, accustomed to being gaslit by professionals despite diagnoses. We battle every day, lose sleep over the next meeting, and constantly seek advice and help. It is exhausting.

Without the correct provision and in the wrong environment, Robert would get exhausted. The stresses, undue pressures, unreasonable expectations, and the noise of a mainstream school were overwhelming. The unattainable targets designed to make the school look good—anyone would be exhausted too! Getting a break? No chance! As holiday season approached, we dreaded taking him away, even to a holiday cottage in Wales. The stress and pressure of a new environment, being away from his phone or Wi-Fi if we went out to explore—no, don’t feel guilty about screen time! This is a self-regulation technique, not necessarily an addiction. Think about it: meeting and greeting, saying yes sir, no sir all day at school, seeking social cues, trying to engage in conversations all day that you can’t keep up with—you need time on your own away from the world. A hyperfocus on a game is as good as watching TV to do that.

This is where we speak from experience. When Robert said he “wanted to help other children like him,” we had to go for it. After all, it is Robert’s money he was awarded.

Why Book a Sensory Caravan Holiday?

OK, so I hear you ask, how is a sensory caravan different from just taking him somewhere? Let us tell you—it’s not just about the destination; it’s about creating a personal, safe, and tailored experience. Here’s why our sensory caravan is the perfect holiday choice for your family.

A Home Away from Home

For a start, it’s his. He has curated it; it’s his. His safe space, his home from home – this is something that he hopes reflects to others. Our sensory caravan offers a home from home and relaxing environment. We go above and beyond, understanding the need for preparation, we have tried to get as many pictures as possible and we also offer a social story that includes noises, sights and smells that you may experience around the park – if you require anything specific let us know so your child can feel prepared secure and comfortable, allowing them to enjoy the holiday fully.

 A Thoughtfully Chosen Location

We’ve selected a relatively small holiday park. Yes, Cresswell Towers can get a bit busy, but nothing compared to the major Butlins or Havens that overload anyone’s sensory input systems at peak season. This more intimate setting ensures a quieter, more manageable environment, reducing the risk of sensory overload and providing a peaceful retreat for your family.

Inclusive and Accessible Design

Our sensory caravan is designed to be inclusive and accessible, ensuring that every family member, regardless of age or ability, can enjoy the holiday. It’s equipped with features that cater to individuals with sensory processing disorders and other special needs. This thoughtful design makes it possible for everyone to participate in and enjoy the holiday.

Tailored Sensory Experiences

For families with children or adults who have sensory processing disorders, the sensory caravan provides a safe and controlled environment. Features such as sensory lighting, a smart speaker to stream music, fidget and sensory toys for regulation or stimming, and various textures allow for personalized sensory experiences that can be both stimulating and soothing. We even provide streaming services!

Our choice of bedding and themed rooms give an even more personalised touch to your stay, hopefully making the bedroom even more of a safe space and relaxing place to be.

The way we have set up the sensory lighting, the little extras we provide, and the design of the decor help create a home-from-home feeling. These elements contribute to an enjoyable holiday for all family members to relax and feel at ease.

Year-Round Availability

We are bookable 365 days a year. So, while the clubhouse may be shut, we are still available. This is perfect if you want a truly peaceful holiday—snuggle up in the caravan with a good book and shut the world out. Our caravan offers the flexibility to plan your holiday whenever it suits you, providing a consistent and reliable getaway option - just be sure to book in advance as we do fill up quickly!.

More Than Just a Holiday

Are we a 5-star hotel? No. Let’s be honest, that’s not what we are about. We’ve had many compliments on what we have achieved and are often called the “luxury” caravan on site. But we are much more about making a safe space where ALL are welcomed and can feel relaxed. Our focus is on creating an environment that supports well-being, comfort, and inclusivity, ensuring that every family member feels valued and at home.

Conclusion

A sensory caravan holiday is more than just a trip away; it’s a personalized, thoughtful, and inclusive experience designed to meet the unique needs of your family. From the curated, safe space of the caravan itself to the carefully chosen location, our aim is to provide a holiday that everyone can enjoy. Whether you’re looking for a quiet retreat, a space to support sensory needs, or simply a home away from home, our sensory caravan offers the perfect solution. Book with us or find us on Facebook and discover a holiday that truly caters to your family’s needs.
